Recording & production Software

Record, produce, and arrange complete songs.

How to choose

Choose a production setup by starting with the handoff you need: live audio, MIDI composition, plug-in instruments, or picture. A small, documented template is more useful than a long list of features you will not use.

Start with the work you must finish

A DAW is the meeting point between recorded audio, MIDI, effects, virtual instruments, and exports. Cubase 15 and REAPER 7.80 are strong candidates for a composition-to-mockup workflow, while Waveform Free is the no-cost Windows starting point described in the free setup guide. Choose from the project backwards: decide whether you need a score handoff, live recording, stem delivery, or a picture timeline before comparing interfaces.

Keep one short test project as a compatibility check. It should contain the plug-in format, MIDI routing, tempo changes, and export type that the real project needs. This catches an edition or host mismatch before a large sample library and a week of work depend on it.

Treat instruments as part of the DAW decision

A production setup is not just its host. Vital and Surge XT can cover synthesis experiments without committing the arrangement to a large sample library, while Pianoteq is a separate physically modeled piano workflow. Kontakt and BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover bring different library and installation rules; verify the plug-in format and library license before building a template around either.

For orchestral writing, preserve the notation source and document how MIDI parts map to instrument instances. That makes it possible to replace a sound or move the session without losing the composer's intent.

Keep the free path honest

A permanent free setup should use a genuinely free edition or library, not an evaluation countdown. The Windows guide uses MuseScore Studio, Waveform Free, and BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover, then names the account, host, plug-in, memory, and orchestral-control limits near the recommendation.

Do not label an unknown compatibility result as supported. Check the current developer documentation for Windows version, plug-in format, architecture, and any video or codec requirements before presenting a setup as ready.
