Build a free composing setup on Windows

Use free editions of MuseScore Studio, Waveform Free, and BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover to write notation, create a MIDI handoff, and make an orchestral audio sketch.

Achievable outcome

At the end, you will have a Windows project that can hold a written score in MuseScore Studio 4.7.4, a MIDI export, and an audio mockup made by loading BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover in Waveform Free. The result is a useful sketch for hearing orchestral balance and timing; it is not a promise of a finished score, a full orchestral library, or a video-synchronized film-scoring rig.

This route deliberately avoids treating REAPER's evaluation period or another temporary trial as permanently free. MuseScore Studio's handbook describes a free download with no account or subscription required, Tracktion describes Waveform Free as an unlimited free DAW, and Spitfire labels BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover as free. The Spitfire installation still requires its account/app flow, and the products' documented limitations remain part of the setup.

Prerequisites and boundaries

Use a 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation kept current with its latest service pack. The catalog's BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover profile records a 64-bit DAW, 8 GB RAM minimum, and 360 MB disk space during installation; treat the current official FAQ and product page as the authority for any changed requirement. Waveform Free's product page also lists Windows 10 and 11.

Download each application from its developer rather than from a repackaged installer. You need enough disk space for the applications and the library, a working audio output, and a DAW project folder you can back up. The guide assumes that the Windows account can install software and that the audio device works in other applications.

This is documentation-verified, not hands-on tested. Labels and menu names can move between releases. If a step differs in a current build, use the linked official handbook or user guide rather than guessing at an installer or plug-in path.

Set up the free tools

Install MuseScore Studio 4.7.4 from the official MuseScore download flow. Install Waveform Free from Tracktion and keep its project files in a known folder. Then install the Spitfire Audio App, sign in, and use it to add BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover; the official installation article documents the app, product selection, content location, and download sequence.

BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover is a dedicated plug-in rather than a requirement to own Kontakt. The catalog profile records AU, VST3, and AAX formats; on Windows, use VST3 in Waveform Free and rescan plug-ins if the DAW does not show it. Spitfire's FAQ says that the library is a single-user license allowed on up to two computers, so do not copy it to a shared multi-user installation as if it were public content.

  1. Install MuseScore Studio 4.7.4 and open a new score. Add the instruments you actually intend to mock up, set a tempo, and save the native score before exporting anything.
  2. Install Waveform Free and create a new project. Choose the audio device and sample rate deliberately, then save the project in its own folder so imported MIDI and renders stay together.
  3. Install the Spitfire Audio App, sign in, select BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover, choose a content location with adequate free space, and wait for the app to finish installing the library and plug-in.
  4. Open Waveform Free and scan or rescan the plug-in locations if Discover is not listed. Confirm that the DAW can instantiate the Discover plug-in before building a large template.

Write, export, and audition

MuseScore's handbook provides the stable handoff: choose File → Export, select MIDI, choose the parts to include or combine, and save the .mid file alongside the source score. Keep a MusicXML or native-score copy as well; MIDI is a performance-data interchange format and does not preserve the score's visual formatting.

In Waveform Free, import the MIDI into the project, put each musical part on a clearly named MIDI track, and load Discover on the track or instrument path documented by the current Waveform guide. Select a suitable Discover instrument or technique, then play a short passage before importing the whole cue. This incremental check makes it easier to tell an import problem from a plug-in problem.

Balance the resulting tracks, adjust velocities or controller data where the notation-to-MIDI translation needs help, and render an audio file using Waveform's documented export workflow. Compare the render with the notation score and save the MIDI, project, and render together so the next revision has a traceable source.

  1. In MuseScore Studio 4.7.4, proof the tempo, instrument names, dynamics, rests, and articulations. Save the score, then use File → Export and select MIDI.
  2. In Waveform Free, import the MIDI file and check that the tempo map and track boundaries match the score. Rename tracks before adding sound so later routing remains readable.
  3. Load BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover using its VST3 plug-in in Waveform Free. Assign a suitable instrument or technique to each part and check one phrase for sound before continuing.
  4. Shape the mockup with velocities, note lengths, controller data, panning, and modest level changes. Recreate important articulation changes in the DAW instead of assuming they survived the MIDI export.
  5. Render a short audio test first. When it matches the intended cue, render the complete mockup and archive the source score, MIDI, Waveform project, and audio file.

Material limitations

Discover is intentionally compact: Spitfire documents 34 instruments, 47 techniques, one mix signal, and a dedicated plug-in. Those limits make it approachable and lightweight, but they do not provide the mic-position and mixing depth of a larger orchestral edition. A simple one-mix sound is not a substitute for a final orchestral recording.

MIDI does not carry the page layout of the notation score, and a MIDI handoff should not be expected to preserve every notation articulation or playback interpretation. Recheck tempo, dynamics, instrument assignment, note lengths, and techniques in the DAW.

This free chain is an audio-mockup setup. It does not claim free video synchronization. If a project must score to picture, choose a DAW edition with documented video support and verify file format, frame rate, timecode, and export behavior before promising a client a synchronized deliverable.

Common problems to check

No Discover plug-in usually means the Spitfire Audio App has not finished the install, the host has not scanned the VST3 location, or the content path needs repair. Reopen the official installation and FAQ instructions before moving library folders manually.

A silent MIDI track can be an instrument assignment, MIDI-channel, monitor, audio-device, or plug-in-output issue. Start with one short track and the DAW's built-in meter, then add parts. If the MIDI sounds late or rushed, compare the exported tempo map with the project tempo before changing note positions.

If the mockup is too generic, that is a library and programming limitation rather than evidence that the MIDI export failed. Use the available techniques, edit velocities and controller data, and keep the score as the authoritative musical document.
