Prepare a clean MIDI handoff

Before exporting, listen through the score and fix the musical source: instrument names, ranges, tempo changes, note lengths, dynamics, and accidental or tied-note mistakes. Make a copy of the source score if you intend to experiment with playback changes.

Troubleshooting the handoff

If bars or tempo changes do not line up, inspect the DAW's tempo map and MIDI import options before moving notes. If the correct number of tracks is present but there is no audio, confirm that each track reaches the Discover plug-in and that the plug-in's output reaches the master bus.

If an instrument sounds wrong, check the track name, MIDI channel, library instrument, and technique. MuseScore's playback sound names do not guarantee a one-to-one match with Discover's instruments. Manual assignment is expected in a cross-application mockup.

If dynamics feel flat, edit velocity and controller data in the DAW and use the techniques that Discover exposes. Do not treat the first render as a test of the score's musical quality; it is a diagnostic pass for the data handoff and sound assignment.

Material limitations

BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover is a compact library. Spitfire documents 34 instruments, 47 techniques, one mix signal, and its dedicated plug-in. It is a useful free starting point, but the available instruments, techniques, and mix control do not represent every orchestral section or the full control of larger editions.

The MIDI route loses visual formatting by design. Preserve the MuseScore file for printing and revisions, and preserve the DAW project for audio programming. If you need to send the project to another composer, include the MIDI and explain which sound library and plug-in version are required.
